A Colorado Odyssey -- July 2006

The summer of 2006 marked the first ever Wilson Traditional-Type Road Trip Vacation.

The trip went off better than either of us possibly expected it would, despite Alana breaking her leg four days before we left (her right leg was in a cast for the entire trip), and largely due to Julie's extensive planning (details below).

Links to various albums covering this trip are posted below. Click on a picture to view the album.

Miscellaneous

I know, I know. Traditionally, this category would come last, but these are a handful of my favorite shots that just don't fall into any of the other categories -- they're a great place to start (if  you are a member of the Love family...there are a couple of especially interesting pictures here).

And the "Little Finger Wrapping" Begins...

By the end of the trip, we were convinced that, if we'd given Alana a tin cup, her smile would have easily collected enough change from strangers to pay for the whole trip. As it was, her father has already promised her: three ponies, a car (including gas money for life), and any toys she asks for (ever!)...

How Did the Kids Get Along?

In a word...we were shocked. They got along great, for the most part. And we have photographic proof!

So...What Exactly IS "White Sands?"

It's a national monument located within a federal missile range -- miles of white gypsum sand dunes (so white that they reflect heat to the point that it is quite pleasant to walk on them in bare feet). The primary activity there is to rent or buy saucers with which to slide down the dunes.

And the Last Week...

Julie kept the kids busy with plenty of activities during the trip home

Tim plays around with nature photography -- no human beings are in any of these pictures.

  • Day 3 -- White Sands National Monument for a few hours of sand dune sledding, then back in the car to drive to Santa Fe
  • Day 4 -- drive to Parker, Colorado (just south of Denver) to the home of Dave and Brittany Roth
  • Days 5 & 6 -- hang out at the Roth's
  • Day 7 -- pick up a rented pop-up camper and head to Estes Park, Colorado; meet up with JM and Tamara Roe and their two kids (friends from Austin), who have a cabin in Estes Park

  • Days 8 & 9 -- various activities in and around Estes Park with the Roes
  • Day 10 -- drive through Rocky Mountain National Park to the west side and set up camp outside Grand Lake
  • Days 11 & 12 -- hang out in and around Grand Lake
  • Day 13 -- return to Parker, Colorado

Week 3 (Starting Saturday, July 15th)

  • Day 16 -- Tim flies back to Austin; the remainder of the trip was just Julie and three kids (remember: she planned it!)
  • Days 17 & 18 -- hang out in Parker, Colorado; return trip to Junglequest, visit the Denver Children's Museum
