Wawel Castle

Wawel Castle is located in Krakow -- a 10-minute walk from Market Square. Krakow was the capital of Poland until the capital was moved to Warsaw, so the town really was the seat of government (the nearby salt mine in Wieliczka was one aspect of the area that made Krakow a suitable location). The chapel at Wawel Castle, therefore, was where all but one of the kings of Poland were coronated, and it was also Pope John Paul II's "home" chapel up until he became the Pope. A view of the back side of one of the chapels at the castle -- that's a dragon on the end of the scupper (details below).

Julie touching the clapper on the bell in the Wawel Castle bell tower.

A view of Krakow from the bell tower.

The view to St. Mary's Church from the bell tower.

A miscellaneous set of rooflines and details that caught my eye.

The Krakow dragon -- outside of Wawel Castle and in front of the dragon's lair (not open while we were there). There is a fairly entertaining legend about "Smok" the dragon of Krakow

Another shot of the same dragon -- from the back side.

A view from one side of Wawel Castle -- not it's most impressive aspect.
