This was one of those projects where some of the core elements presented
themselves, and then a couple of projects came out based on what was provided. When
we bought our current house in July 2003, we had some remodeling done. This
meant that what had once been the breakfast area became, instead, a crafts area
for the kid. Julie explained that we needed to get an island for the area for
the kids to do their crafts on. That was the base requirement for the project. In
May 2004, Laurie Flood (former co-worker, now an Austin
realtor) and her husband, Mike, replaced their dining room table and offered
us their old one: Not
exactly an island, right? But, who could pass up a butcher block top like that!
Ultimately, this table got split into parts and reassembled as major components
in both a craft island and a hallway table: Island
features: drawers on both ends, doors with friction catches on both sides, fixed
shelf inside. And...the hall table made over with what was left. I had to tack
on an extra 1.5" on the back edge of the top, but, ultimately, the only
unused parts from the original table were a couple of 24" rails from the
original square table. Not bad!
