Gilligan on the AT Revisited: 31-Aug-1993
August 31, 2008
This is a 5-month long series of blog posts that are the entries in my journals written on most evenings as I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1993. The journal entry appears first — indented — and then any additional commentary from my 15-years-removed perspective follows. 8/31/93 – Tue. Back on the trail, sort of. […]
Family Vacation Part 10: Meeting “Gilligan on the AT Revisited”
August 30, 2008
This is the post where our family vacation meets my writing up of my Appalachian Trail experiences from 1993. My parents didn’t find Rangeley, Maine, entirely on their own. They asked me for my input, seeing as I had walked through the state. Of course, my walk-through provided a pretty narrow perspective, but I told […]
Family Vacation Part 9: Cute Kids in Rangeley
August 29, 2008
These are various kid pics from the Rangeley leg of our vacation that just didn’t seem to fit into any of the posts up to this point. This first picture is not just of Alana and Carson doing the dishes one evening. It is also the last recorded picture of that glass in Alana’s hand […]
Family Vacation Part 8: Hangin’ with the Herberts
August 28, 2008
The trip to Maine was planned for almost a full year, largely because, as we moved away from Austin, we knew we were moving away from a family with whom we’ve become very close over the last decade — the Herberts (I tend to get in a visit with Bob of some sort on virtually […]
Family Vacation Part 7: Around the Falls
August 27, 2008
We did a couple of day hikes — one with just the Wilsons to Smalls Falls, and then another one after the Herberts arrived to Angel Falls. Smalls Falls There will be a “Then and Now” post at some point from this hike…but that’s for another time. Smalls Falls doesn’t really have much of a […]
Family Vacation Part 6: For the Birds!
August 26, 2008
Various groups of ducks on the lake paddle by the dock off and on throughout the day. We had some old bagels that lasted long enough that, not only were there seven ducks, there were a half-dozen seagulls vying for a snack. Probably not the most environmentally responsible thing to do…but damn hard to resist.
Gilligan on the AT Revisited: 26-Aug-1993

Family Vacation Part 5: IN the Water
August 25, 2008
The temperature of the water in Rangeley Lake hovered between 69 and 71 degrees Fahrenheit during our stay. Several of the locals commented about how it had “finally warmed up,” and both myself and Bob Herbert agreed that the water seemed a tad warmer than the last time we had been in it. But it […]
Family Vacation Part 4: On the Water
August 24, 2008
We spent just over six days at my parents’ cabin in Rangeley, Maine. This is only the second time that we’ve been to the cabin (first time for Alana), and it was every bit as wonderful as we remember. View Larger Map (If you don’t see the satellite view, you may need to click on […]
